Degree Requirements

Students are responsible for understanding their degree requirements for the Operations Research and Engineering major and planning their course of study. The ORIE Undergraduate Office in 203 Rhodes Hall provides specific information to assist students with degree requirements and can answer specific questions related to course selection and planning. An OR&E Checklist is available to every affiliated student and is updated at the end of each semester. This checklist can be very helpful to students in planning their course of study. Please contact the undergraduate coordinator or stop by 203 Rhodes for a copy.

All freshmen and sophomores in the College of Engineering take an array of courses designed to provide a strong foundation for later specialization. To earn a Bachelor of Science degree in the OR&E major, a student must complete the Common Curriculum of the College of Engineering together with the Operations Research & Engineering Major Program.

College of Engineering and OR&E Major Requirements include:

10-course (37 credits) engineering core:
  • Math 1910, 1920, 2930,* 2940
  • Chemistry 2090
  • Physics 1112, 2213, 2214*
  • CS 1110 or 1112
*Either Math 2930, 3040, or CS 2800 can be used to satisfy the fourth math requirement. Students NOT taking Math 2930 may not enroll in Physics 2214. The following courses may be substituted for Phys 2214, if not used to meet other requirements: Chem 2080, Math 3110, Math 2930, Math 3040, Math 3360 or CS 2800.
3 Engineering Distribution Courses (9 credits)Introduction to Engineering (ENGRI 1XXX)

Minimum of 9 credits of ORIE ElectivesORIE courses at the 4000 level or above
Minimum of 9-12 credits of Major-Approved Electives 3 of which must be outside of ORIE*Technical courses in Engineering at the 2000 level or above.
Minimum of 6 credits of Advisor-Approved ElectivesCourses approved by the student’s advisor and deemed relevant to student’s educational objectives
Liberal Electives—6 courses, 18 credits minimum taken from at least of 3 of the 7 groups. 2 courses must be at the 2000 level or above.Courses must be taken from the following 6 groups:
  • Cultural Analysis (CA)
  • Historical Analysis (HA)
  • Literature and the Arts (LA)
  • Knowledge, Cognition, and Moral Reasoning (KCM)
  • Social and Behavioral Analysis (SBA)
  • Communications in Engineering (CE)
  • Foreign Language
2 semesters of physical educationSwimming test must be passed
2 semesters of Freshman Writing SeminarsIn addition to the first-year writing seminars, a technical writing course must be taken as an engineering distribution, liberal studies, or advisor-approved elective.

*The Organizational Behavior requirement may be replaced with an additional 3 credits of Major Approved Electives, from either category A or B. This additional course must be outside of ORIE.

1Students are allowed to replace the requirement for ORIE 3150 (Financial and Managerial Accounting) by taking at least one of:

MATH 3110 (Introduction to Analysis)
MATH 4130 (Honors Real Analysis)
MATH 4310 (Linear Algebra)
MATH 4330 (Honors Linear Algebra)
Any 6000 level ORIE course

If a course is used to replace this requirement, then it cannot be used as an advisor approved, major approved, or ORIE elective.
