When Elisa Gunawan first heard about industrial engineering, the domain was explained to her as “where business meets engineering” – little did she know that this term would also excellently describe her journey afterwards.

Before coming to Cornell in Fall 2014, Elisa graduated with a Master of Entrepreneurship and a B.S.E in Industrial & Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. Her past technical experience include building a genetic algorithm-based meeting scheduler for her senior design project and interning in Infosys Technologies Ltd., where she worked on a project for optimizing device selection in mobile application testing; for the latter, a particular contribution of hers was defining approximately 190 variables to be used for this purpose. On the business side, she had been involved in conducting extensive market research and interacting directly with clients through a fellowship in University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Labor, Employment, and the Economy.

Fitting to her “making the most of what is available” approach to life, she also participated in a plethora of activities outside of classes – from being engaged in research assistantships, studying abroad (in Shanghai, China), holding organizational leadership positions, playing badminton, volunteering, to competing in business plan and idea pitch competitions.
