On June 7, 2007, Professor Protter gave the first annual Richard von Mises Lecture in Berlin, Germany, on the subject of financial bubbles.
Professor Protter lectured on the subject of "Modeling Financial Bubbles" at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Berlin. He presented a mathematical way to understand what bubbles in a financial market are, when they occur, and how they can be "born". Currently on leave from ORIE, Professor Protter holds the Fulbright Distinguished Chair De Tocqueville, for which he is spending the fall semester in Paris. He is teaching two courses at the University of Paris (Dauphine) as well as presenting lectures to the general public.
Richard von Mises (1883 - 1953) was professor of applied mathematics at the University of Berlin from 1920 to 1933. Due to rising antisemitism he went into exile, first in Turkey and then in the US. He described his work as being on "practical analysis, integral and differential equations, mecahnics, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, constructive geometry, probability calculus, statistics and philosophy."
