The annual "Best on the Street" compilation by the Wall Street Journal has again named ORIE alum Todd Rethemeier, B.S. '93 M.Eng. '94 MBA '95, as one of the top analysts of telecommunication stocks. Rethemeier is on the Advisory Board of CFEM.
For the second year in a row, the Wall Street Journal "Best on the Street Special Report" has named Todd Rethemeier, BS '93 MEng '94 MBA '95, as a top stock analyst. This year, Rethemeier achieved the rank of number 2 in the mobile telecommunications sector. Last year he was number 3 in the fixed line telecommunications sector.
In announcing this year's designation, the Journal commended a pre-IPO report by Rethemeier that advised investors not to buy a particular stock because "the underwriters' estimates on earnings were way too high" (the stock subsequently dropped 46 percent), as well as his recommendation of another stock that earned 41 percent before he downgraded his rating to 'hold'.
The analyst rankings for "Best on the Street" are based on performance scores that are calculated from the estimated total return of each stock an analyst covered in an industry. Analysts got credit for being right in their recommendations: for a stock rated "buy," a positive total return yielded a positive score but a negative return produced a negative score, and conversely for a stock rated "sell."
Last year, Forbes magazine named Rethemeier the number one earnings estimator in the wireless telecommunication services sector. The Forbes ranking is based on the number of months when Rethemeier's estimate for a company's earnings was closer to the actual earnings than the so-called consensus estimate for that company of all participating analysts. Rethemeier is frequently interviewed in the print and video media, as in this May 12, 2008 report on CNBC.
Rethemeier is the founder and CEO of Sur Terre Research, which is associated with Soleil Securities Group. Earlier, he was a telecommunications securities analyst at Banc of America Securities, J. P. Morgan, and Bear Stearns, and was a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. He is a charter member of the Advisory Board of Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan (CFEM), ORIE's unit in the Wall Street district, where students in the Financial Engineering Concentration spend the third semester of their Master of Engineering program.
