Undergraduates and Master of Engineering students have voted for Faculty Member of the Year and Teaching Assistant of the Year. Huseyin Topaloglu, Peter Jackson, Yinan Huang and Tia Sondjaja were selected.
Despite being on sabbatical leave in Turkey during the spring semester, Associate Professor Huseyin Topaloglu has been named Faculty Member of the Year in recent balloting by ORIE undergraduates. Master of Engineering students selected Professor Peter Jackson for the same honor.
The undergraduates selected Ph.D. student Mutiara (Tia) Sondjaja as Teaching Assistant of the year, and the Master of Engineering students selected Yinan Huang, who is completing his Ph.D. degree. Awards were presented at an informal ceremony on May 10.

Student Leadership Committee, as Jack Rong looks on.Jackson, who taught both the introductory Industrial Data and Systems Analysis course and Systems Architecture, Behavior and Optimization in the spring, first received the annual teaching award nearly 25 years ago, and has done so several times since, most recently in 2008. Topaloglu previously received the award in 2005, after his third year of teaching in ORIE. He taught Simulation Modeling and Analysis in the fall, of 2009 prior to going to Turkey.

He was teaching assistant to Johannes Wissel for Financial Engineering with Stochastic Calculus, an M.Eng. level course, and to Eric Friedman for Information Technology, an undergraduate course. He was not able to be present to accept his award.
Sondjaja, who is from Indonesia, graduated from Harvey Mudd college and is a second year Ph.D. student. She served as teaching assistant in both semesters of the Optimization sequence, for Robert Bland in the fall and Leslie Trotter in the spring. Rising senior Pamela Hidajat knew Tia as teaching assistant in both courses. "She put in a lot of time and effort in teaching students materials that they were not familiar with at first," said Hidajat. "Tia has a lot of patience and does not make students feel inferior when they do not known the material very well."
