Robert S. Kaplan, ORIE Ph.D. '68, Speaks to Cornell Wall Street on February 4

Robert Kaplan, ORIE Ph.D. '68, is Baker Foundation Professor at Harvard Business School.  He will speak at the Cornell Club on February 4, 2010 on "Maximizing Strategy Execution and Minimizing Risk: An Uneasy Alliance."

One of Harvard Business School's best known professors, Dr. Robert Kaplan, will speak to the new Cornell Wall Street networking organization on February 4 at the Cornell Club, 6 E. 44th Street.   In his talk, "Maximizing Strategy Execution and Minimizing Risk: An Uneasy Alliance,"  he will share his latest thinking on how risk management can be effectively integrated with strategy execution.  Among the timely questions he will address is "why exactly did we miss risks that now seem obvious?"

Kaplan is the developer of two widely adopted management tools, Activity-Based Costing and the Balanced Scorecard, which are designed to help organizations measure both financial and non-financial progress towards long-term strategic goals.  In his talk he will discuss how the Balanced Scorecard transforms companies by helping top executives set corporate strategy and translate it into objectives, measures and targets that the entire workforce understands.

Kaplan received his Ph.D. from ORIE in 1968 and joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, serving as Dean from 1977 to 1983 before moving to the Harvard Business School, where he is now Baker Foundation Professor, in 1984.   He is the author or co-author of 14 books, more than 120 papers, and 18 Harvard Business Review articles, including one featured on the cover of the current (Jan-Feb 2010) issue.  He was elected to the Accounting Hall of Fame in 2006 and was named one of the Top 50 Thinkers and Writers on Management Topics by Accenture in 2002 and 2003.   He returned to Cornell in 2003 as a Bangs Memorial Lecturer and Park Leadership Speaker.  F

Cornell Wall Street is a "professional alumni business-affinity program" launched in May 2009.   It was established  "for all Cornellians who are interested in connecting with others in the financial industry".  From time to time the organization features networking receptions and speakers in New York, including a panel on high frequency and algorithmic trading, moderated by Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan director Victoria Averbukh, that is currently being planned. The February 4th event begins at 5:15 PM with an optional networking reception, with Kaplan's presentation at 6 PM and a continuation of networking at 8 PM following the presentation and Q&A.   The cost is $40, with a cash bar.
