Christine A. Shoemaker was among 32 members honored March 28 by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She is the Joseph P. Ripley Professor at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and School of Operations Research and Information Engineering.

Each year SIAM designates as fellows of the society members who have made outstanding contributions to fields served by SIAM. Fellows are nominated by peers for their distinguished contributions to the fields of applied mathematics and computational science and related disciplines.a

Shoemaker was recognized for her development and use of computational optimization algorithms for finding cost-effective management solutions to complex problems in a wide range of environmentally related areas. Her research centers on finding cost-effective, robust solutions for environmental problems by using optimization, modeling, and statistical analyses.

The Class of 2014 Fellows will be recognized at the 2014 SIAM Annual Meeting to be held in Chicago in July.

SIAM, headquartered in Philadelphia, is an international society of over 14,000 individual members, including applied and computational mathematicians and computer scientists, as well as other scientists and engineers. Members from 85 countries are researchers, educators, students, and practitioners in industry, government, laboratories, and academia. The society, which also includes nearly 500 academic and corporate institutional members, serves and advances the disciplines of applied mathematics and computational science by publishing a variety of books and prestigious peer-reviewed research journals, by conducting conferences, and by hosting activity groups in various areas of mathematics. SIAM provides many opportunities for students including regional sections and student chapters. Further information is available at www.siam.org.
