ORIE Professor Publishes Best Seller

Sidney Resnick's new book. "Heavy-Tail Phenomena: Probabilistic and Statistical Modeling", is number 14 on the best seller list.

Professor Resnick's text, "Heavy-Tail Phenomena: Probabilistic and Statistical Modeling", is among the top 20 best selling mathematics books in 2007, according to a ranking compiled by YPB Library Services, a "provider of books & services, innovation & integration to academic libraries worldwide," and published in Libary Journal Academic Newswire in October.

Resnick is a Professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell. The book is published by Springer. According to the publisher, it gives "an interesting and useful blend of the mathematical, probabilistic and statistical tools used in heavy-tail analysis. Heavy tails are characteristic of many phenomena where the probability of a single huge value impacts heavily. Record-breaking insurance losses, financial returns, file sizes stored on a server, transmission rates of files are all examples of heavy-tailed phenomena."

The YPB listing is based on total copies sold (not total revenue) since February 2007.
