Sherri Stuewer, ORIE '73 MS '75, presented Cornell President David Skorton with a check from the ExxonMobil Foundation matching the gifts of nearly $200,000 by the company's employees, retirees and others.
The ExxonMobil Foundation's Educational Matching Gift program matches, on a three-to-one basis, donations by its employees, retirees, their surviving spouses and directors of the company to institutions of higher education with which they are affiliated. Cornell ranks fifth among the 930 colleges and universities that received gifts from the foundation this year. The gifts from those who are affiliated with Cornell, together with the foundation gift, totaled nearly $800,000 this year. Some of these funds have been directed by alumni to ORIE for fellowship and other funds.
Sherri Stuewer, who presented the foundation check to President David Skorton on May 22, received her BS from ORIE in 1973 and MS two years later, after which she joined Exxon's mathematics and systems organization in Florham Park, New Jersey (Exxon merged with Mobil in 1998). During her career with the company, Stuewer has held a variety of positions, including manager of Exxon's Baytown, TX, refinery, manager of the supply department of Exxon Company USA, and manager of corporate strategic planning. She is currently vice president for safety, health and environment, where she has become a spokesperson on climate change. She was recently featured in a double-page advertising spread about energy and the environment in the Wall Street Journal.
Stuewer has headed Cornell's Engineering College Council and is currently a member of the Cornell Board of Trustees. She returned to ORIE in April, 2002 to deliver the 2001-2002 John R. Bangs Jr. Memorial Lecture on the topic of "Optimization in the Oil Business from Top to Bottom."
