With the appointment of Dr. Victoria Averbukh as University Chapter Director, Cornell now has a chapter in the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), a worldwide organization offering certification, training and educational programs.
The Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) has more than 100,000 members, and student chapters in 13 countries around the world. Through Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan (CFEM), Cornell now has its own student chapter in this organization, which offers risk management certification, training and educational programs.
According to GARP, the association offers the only globally recognized certifications in financial and energy risk management. In addition to the certificate programs, GARP offers chapter meetings and events, a journal - "the largest digital library in the world dedicated to the risk management profession" - and a career center. Students, alumni and others may sign up for a free affiliate membership (which provides access to the career center and local chapter meetings). Students may chose a free student membership entitling them to publications and programs. Students and alumni may also join a group specifically for members of the Cornell chapter.
Dr. Victoria Averbukh, who directs CFEM and has been appointed University Chapter Director for Cornell, notes that "As a former sell-side strategist at large investment banks, I have first-hand experience with risk management issues such as security valuation and the building of models that incorporate market pricing and seek to address embedded risks. As Chapter Director, I hope to encourage others to view risk management as an essential tool and not as a constraint."
Professor Shane Henderson, until recently Interim Director of ORIE, stated that "ORIE supports the efforts of a GARP University Chapter on campus."
