While working in private equity and telecom, Seth Cochran organized a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro for charity. Now he devotes full time to an organization that deals with obstetric fistula, "the most devastating problem you've never heard of." Read more

The National Science Foundation's new Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation program has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Professor Eric Friedman and co-Principal Investigators Steven Strogatz and Ao Kevin Tang for study of the dynamics of the Internet. Read more

The National Research Council has strongly recommended Professional Science Masters programs in the natural sciences. In doing so, the NRC follows the lead of Master of Engineering programs that ORIE and others at Cornell have offered for many years. Read more
The strength of the ORIE alumni network was in evidence when at least 20 ORIE alumni, representing 16 or more companies, came to Barton Hall for the annual Career Fairs that span two days in early September, one of which was specifically devoted to recruiting engineering students. Professor Dawn B. Woodard received a B.S. degree in mathematical and computational science from Stanford University and holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University, where she studied in the Department of Statistical Science. She joined ORIE in Fall 2008 and currently teaches the Statistical Data Mining course, which deals with extracting information from large sets of data in order to draw conclusions relevant to business and other problems.
