Master of Engineering
The Master of Engineering is a full-time professionally oriented program building on traditional math, scientific, and engineering skills and emphasizing practical application. Every M.Eng. student gains greater breadth and depth of technical knowledge along with the opportunity to synthesize material studied in the classroom and apply it to a real problem faced by a real organization.
The program's technical emphasis is on mathematical modeling and on applying quantitative techniques embedded in the fields of optimization, probability, stochastic processes, and statistics to the design and operations of systems.
Instead of a thesis, students complete a team-based engineering design project during which they work closely with practicing engineers and analysts as well as Cornell faculty members. Students engage in all aspects of project work, from problem formulation to communication of results. The projects encompass a wide variety of interesting real-world problems and are sponsored by industrial, financial, or government organizations.
For many students, the M.Eng. program can be completed in two semesters. A third semester is required for some students depending on their undergraduate degree and M.Eng. concentration. Most concentrations entail project work or other activities during the winter intersession.
M.Eng. students in ORIE concentrate in one of the following seven areas:
- Applied Operations Research (AOR)
- Data Analytics (DA)
- Financial Engineering (FE)
- Information Technology (IT)
- Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering (MIE)
- Strategic Operations (SO)
- Systems Engineering
