David Shmoys named INFORMS Fellow, joining other ORIE faculty and alumni
Laibe/Acheson Professor David Shmoys has been elected a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences
The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) has elected ORIE professor David Shmoys as a Fellow of the Institute. The award, for “outstanding lifetime achievement,” is now given to no more than 12 individuals each year who “have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments and made significant contributions to the advancement of OR/MS.” Shmoys was cited for “his landmark achievements in the design of approximation algorithms for discrete and stochastic optimization problems, and for his exemplary contributions to education.”
Shmoys recently became Director of Cornell’s School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) and the book he coauthored with David S. Williamson won the 2013 INFORMS Lanchester Prize. Shmoys joined ORIE in 1989.
Along with Shmoys, two ORIE Ph.D. alumni, Sheldon Jacobson Ph.D. ’88 and Jon Lee ’81 Ph.D. ‘86, were among the twelve individuals elected Fellows this year. Jacobson is a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois and Lee is the G. Lawton and Louise G. Johnson Professor Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Previously elected ORIE INFORMS Fellows
Shmoys joins previously named INFORMS Fellows from ORIE, including four emeriti: Emerson Electric Company Professor of Manufacturing Management Richard Conway ’54 Ph.D. ‘58; Andrew Schultz Jr. Professor of Industrial Engineering William Maxwell ’57 Ph.D. ’61; Robin Roundy; and Acheson-Laibe Professor of Engineering John (Jack) Muckstadt. Current ORIE professors Jim Dai and Michael Todd are also INFORMS Fellows.
Jacob Gould Professor of Computer Science Eva Tardos and Joseph P. Ripley Professor of Engineering Christine Shoemaker, both members of the Graduate Field of Operations Research, are INFORMS Fellows, as are previous ORIE professors Donald Iglehart, George Nemhauser, Lee Schruben '68, and Shaler Stidham.
