Professional Development Programs Offered to Cornell’s Financial Engineering Students

With the establishment of Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan (CFEM), ORIE’s Financial Engineering program expanded its Professional Development programs to better prepare our students for careers in finance. CFEM offers several programs that prepare our students for successful internships and full-time placement. While CFEM is not a job placement office, we are committed to 100% placement rates and work hard to ensure that our students get the theoretical, computational, and interpersonal skills needed for successful careers.

Only Master of Engineering students enrolled in the three-semester Financial Engineering concentration are eligible to participate in CFEM Professional Development programs outlined below.

Financial firms interested in participating in any of our Professional Development events should contact CFEM Director, Dr. Victoria Averbukh at vza1@cornell.edu.

New Student Orientation

This annual event is usually held in August a week before the start of the fall semester and provides the very first opportunity for our new students to learn the essentials of getting a job in finance.

Meet and Greet Wall Street

Each year, Financial Engineering students gather in New York City  for an evening of dsicussions and networking with Wall Streeters and learn about careers in finance.

Summer Internship and Full-Time Placement Assistance

CFEM works together with the Engineering Co-Op and Career Services office to assist students in their summer and full-time placement. Students may choose to work only with the ECCS office on the Ithaca campus or submit their resumes to CFEM as well. CFEM maintains connections with corporate sponsors and individuals working in finance to provide students with adequate exposure to the financial community and career development tools. These connections greatly complement the resources offered by the ECCS office in 101 Carpenter Hall, but do not replace them. CFEM does not guarantee job placement and does not act as a recruiting firm. However, CFEM assists students by directly informing them of the skills needed for successful job hunting, offering advice about specific areas of finance, constantly informing financial companies of students available for summer and full-time employments, and facilitating networking opportunities.

Career Fridays

At CFEM all Fridays are free of classes and are dedicated to assisting CFEM students in their job search.

Bridge to Wall Street

CFEM’s state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment allows for interactive sessions with FE students in Ithaca. These students are in their first and second semester of studies and are preparing for summer internships.
