Analyst, Goldman Sachs
Quantitative Equities Department,
Investment Management Division

The Financial Engineering Program at Cornell has prepared me well for starting a career at the Quantitative Equities Department at Goldman Sachs. In the program, I took courses in Fixed Income, Investments, Derivatives as well as statistics and optimization. These courses combine to provide me with a balance of quantitative and finance background. The best part of the program is participating in the financial engineering project. We have the opportunity to network with high caliber investment bankers and to work on actual projects from the industry. The experience is unique because we get to solve real life problems in an academic setting. Our professors and teaching assistants are extremely helpful, and working with them is another valuable aspect of the program. I think the Financial Engineering Program at Cornell is suitable for students who are interested in finance, especially those who plan to pursue a quantitative career on Wall Street.

The OR Ph.D. program combines rigorous research traditions with a high quality training emphasis. The flexible curriculum allows students to follow a remarkable range of courses offered in related fields. The department's links to the dynamic and vibrant Finance research community at Cornell enabled me to pursue a minor concentration in Finance, which broadened my research perspective and proved to be an important asset on the job market. Also, the friendly and stimulating atmosphere in the department contributes to the ideal environment for an enriching and rewarding Ph.D. experience.

As a person very familiar with the Masters of Engineering program at ORIE and someone who is active in our Fixed Income Research recruitment, I can say with confidence that the Financial Engineering graduates enter the world equipped with the most essential practical and analytical skills. While we adhere to very high standards, we always find good candidates among the ORIE graduates. I am proud to be an alum of the Cornell ORIE department.

The applied curriculum of the Financial Engineering program provided me with a firm foundation to be successful in my role as a Quantitative Analyst in the Fixed Income Research Department at Salomon Smith Barney. I left the program with a tool box of skills that helped me to immediately contribute to the efforts of my group, which was essential to my promotion to Vice-President within three short years. The focus on group projects was a good orientation to the dynamics of the work environment in the "real world." And the reputation of the Cornell continues to open doors for me. I highly recommend the Masters of Engineering Program to students who want to bridge the gap between the theory and application of financial mathematics in order to pursue more quantitative careers on Wall Street.
