The School of Operations Research and Information Engineering has a long history of successful interaction with business, government, and nonprofit institutions. Companies participate in ORIE courses, projects, and research; provide co-op assignments and internships; hire graduating senior, M.Eng., and Ph.D. students; and take advantage of continuing and executive educational opportunities.  See the OR Manhattan Corporate Partnership page for further information, particularly in relation to Financial Engineering.

Participating in Courses, Projects, and Research

We encourage companies and visiting executives to assist our faculty in the classroom through participation in lectures or colloquia as well as hosting company visits and plant tours. At a more intensive level of interaction, Cornell Masters students have worked with sponsoring companies and other organizations on projects that offer valuable insights to the sponsor while fulfilling a central academic requirement. Learn more about typical projects and how to sponsor a project with ORIE.

Many ORIE faculty members are engaged in collaborative research and consulting with companies and actively seek to build these relationships. Review faculty research by areas of specialization.

Co-ops and Internships

During their academic programs ORIE students can work as co-op students and undertake summer internships in a wide variety of industries. For the financial services industry, a new summer internship program has been developed to link Master of Engineering students specializing in Financial Engineering with companies.

Recruiting ORIE Students

Meet the ORIE M.Eng. students.   ORIE graduates at all levels possess a broad array of attributes avidly sought by most companies:

  • creativity in analyzing and solving problems;
  • proficiency with computers, software and data;
  • accounting and financial literacy;
  • planning, teamwork, and communication skills; and
  • advanced training in techniques to model and solve complex decision problems that entail effective use of scarce resources over time and under conditions of uncertainty.

Because Operations Research is less well-known than many traditional engineering fields, companies that recognize that ORIE provides such a rich pool of candidates may have a competitive edge in recruiting.

Continuing and Executive Education

Through our new Operations Research Manhattan program, the School of Operations Research brings together cutting-edge, multidisciplinary skills in business optimization research and decision support services aimed at strengthening industry and public sector collaboration. From multimedia distance learning to customized executive education programs, we will work with your organization.
