Peter Rimschnick

Peter Rimshnick came to ORIE after talking to upper-class students who were already in the program. “I thought the combination of applied math, computer science, and finance would be powerful in today’s world, and also something that I would enjoy,” he says.

He was not disappointed. “The faculty is diverse in background and second to none in quality. The courses offered allow students to explore lots of different OR applications, which opens lots of doors in whatever career they are seeking,” Rimshnick says. His favorite courses included Optimization II and Simulation Modeling and Analysis, which he says integrated theory and practical application. His non-ORIE courses included lots of computer science courses as well as economics, math, and science and liberal arts requirements. As a Bang’s Research Scholar, he studied computational tools for solving hard optimization problems and helped to develop computational recitations for undergraduate courses.

Outside the classroom, Rimshnick has been vice president for the Cornell Chapter of Acacia International Fraternity and a Cornell Freshman Orientation Leader, helping new students settle into life at the university.

Now that he has graduated, Rimshnick is looking to launch a career that makes good use of the skills he’s learned at Cornell, “especially involving applications of optimization techniques. Whether this will lead into a management role or pure engineering, I’m not sure.”
