Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan (CFEM)

Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan fosters close working relationships between Cornell University's School of Operations Research and Information Engineering and the financial services industry by building on the highly successful financial engineering program on the Ithaca campus.

CFEM relies on our distinguished Advisory Council to ensure that our programs and activities benefit financial firms, master-level students, and faculty.

Financial firms can use CFEM initiatives and academic programs to gain access to top-level academic talent and research and to stay abreast of innovative, cutting edge financial theory, modeling, analysis, and computational tools. Our alumni working in finance find CFEM activities especially rewarding, as they now have many more opportunities to interact with our students and faculty and network with other alumni.

Our corporate partnership program offers many opportunities for financial companies to get involved with CFEM, our faculty, and student.

CFEM programs complement the theoretical education of our Master of Engineering students in Financial Engineering by providing practical understanding of the financial markets through its professional development programs and third semester curriculum. CFEM offers a variety of professional development programs specifically designed to prepare FE students for their successful careers in finance. FE students who spend their third semester at CFEM learn directly from Wall Street practitioners, work closely with FE project sponsors, and participate in various networking events.

Cornell FE Manhattan benefits the research of our faculty and Ph.D. students by facilitating dialogue and collaboration with financial services institutions. CFEM strives to maintain a balance between the deep mathematics of state-of-the-art theory and the increasingly complex practical needs of the financial services industry.

CFEM’s state-of-the-art broadcasting system allows for a interactive seminars and lectures to Ithaca campus, further enhancing FE students’ and faculty’s interaction with financial professionals.

To further strengthen ties with Wall Street, ORIE turned to Dr. Victoria Averbukh (ORIE, Ph.D. ’97), who spent 10 years on Wall Street, to run CFEM. Dr. Averbukh plans to build up the CFEM as a liaison between Wall Street and ORIE. “We are bringing Wall Street into our classroom to maintain Cornell FE’s top tier status”, Averbukh says.
