Blockchain-based cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen a meteoric rise in popularity over the past few years. They now process hundreds of thousand transactions per day, use as much electricity as a small country and have a combined market capitalization in excess of one hundred billion dollars. This talk will provide an introduction to the underlying technology. We will discuss key concepts such as cryptographic hash functions, digital signatures, and proof-of-work schemes and examine how a decentralized cryptocurrency can be constructed from these building blocks.
